New polling by the Campaign Against Antisemitism reveals a bleak outlook among British Jews, with only 34% believing that Jews have a long-term future in the UK. Alarmingly, half of the Jewish community has considered leaving the country in the past two years due to antisemitism.

The sentiment is even more pronounced among younger Jews: 67% of those aged 18–24 have contemplated leaving the UK, with 76% citing the surge in antisemitism since October 7, 2023, as the primary reason.

Fewer than half of British Jews (43%) feel welcome in the UK, while nearly half (47%) of 18–24-year-olds report feeling unwelcome. Additionally, a majority (58%) of British Jews say they hide their Judaism due to fears of antisemitism.

PROTECTION BY THE LAW

THIS IS MADNESS

British Jews consider Islamists to be the most serious threat (95%), compared to the far-right (67%), and the far-left (91%). More than nine in ten British Jews do not believe that the authorities do enough to protect the Jewish community from Islamists.

Fewer than one in ten British Jews believe that authorities are adequately addressing and punishing antisemitism, with 84% expressing dissatisfaction. In Scotland, nearly 20% of Jews would not report an antisemitic hate crime to the police, and almost two-thirds lack confidence that such crimes would be prosecuted.

Across the UK, only 16% of British Jews feel confident that an antisemitic crime would be prosecuted if there were sufficient evidence. This figure drops to just 13% in London, where 64% express skepticism—the highest level of distrust geographically.

Alarmingly, 80% of British Jews believe that the police are failing to provide adequate protection. Similarly, confidence in the justice system is low, with only 10% trusting the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to protect them and just 13% feeling the same about the courts.

When it comes to policing anti-Israel marches, three-quarters of British Jews are dissatisfied with the response of their local police forces, while only 10% express satisfaction. Confidence in Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley is also notably low, with just 5% of British Jews supporting him and 60% believing he should step down.

THE POLITICS OF JEW HATRED

The survey reveals widespread dissatisfaction among British Jews with political leaders and parties regarding their handling of antisemitism.

In London, 85% of British Jews express dissatisfaction with Mayor Sadiq Khan’s performance concerning the Jewish community since October 7, 2023, while fewer than 10% are satisfied. In Manchester, one-third of British Jews are dissatisfied with Mayor Andy Burnham and only 12% report satisfaction. In Northern England, satisfaction with Burnham rises slightly to 30%, but dissatisfaction also increases to nearly half (49%).

The perception of political parties is similarly concerning. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of British Jews believe the Green Party is too tolerant of antisemitism among its representatives and supporters—the highest figure ever recorded for the Greens. This marks the first time another party has overtaken Labour (71%) in this polling. The Scottish National Party (SNP) has also crossed the majority threshold, with 52% of British Jews viewing the party as too tolerant of antisemitism, a sentiment shared by 72% of Scottish Jews.

The figures for other parties are as follows: 42% for Sinn Féin, 40% for the Liberal Democrats, 26% for Plaid Cymru, 22% each for the Conservatives and UKIP, 21% for the Democratic Unionist Party, and 19% for the Reform Party.

ANTI-JEWISH MEDIA BIAS

The survey highlights significant concerns among British Jews regarding media bias and its impact on their community. An overwhelming 92% believe that media bias against Israel fuels the persecution of Jews in Britain.

Among broadcasters, the BBC received the harshest criticism, with 92% of British Jews rating its coverage of Jewish matters as unfavorable. Among newspapers, *The Guardian* scored the worst, with nearly seven in ten (69%) describing its coverage as unfavorable.

Additionally, more than four-fifths (84%) of British Jews agree that boycotts targeting Israeli artists, academics, or businesses selling Israeli products amount to intimidation. This sentiment is particularly relevant given the prevalence of such boycotts over the past year.

JEW-HATRED IN ACADEMIA

The survey underscores the deep concerns British Jews have about antisemitism on campuses and in educational environments.

Only 3% of British Jews are confident that a university’s administration would take appropriate action if a Jewish student reported an antisemitic incident. Among younger Jews, confidence rises slightly to 6%. Alarmingly, 90% of young British Jews attribute the rise in reported antisemitic incidents on UK campuses to students themselves.

Antisemitism is a significant consideration for Jewish families when selecting educational institutions. Nine in ten British Jews said antisemitism would influence their choice of university for a family member, while 88% said the same for choosing a school.

Additionally, 95% of British Jews view the chant “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” as an antisemitic call to destroy the Jewish state, with only 2% disagreeing. Similarly, just 2% of British Jews feel that the anti-Zionist Neturei Karta sect represents their views on Israel.

The survey was conducted between June 3 and 11, 2024. In total, 4,078 responses were obtained.

A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “As we reflect today on historic antisemitism, as a society we also have to ask ourselves: why are we doing so little about antisemitism right here, right now? The truth is that Britain and the authorities are failing the Jewish community. These figures paint a sobering picture of the lives of British Jews and their future.

“British Jews have lost trust in the criminal justice system in general, which they do not feel is protecting them, and in the Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley in particular, after he has presided over the worst surge in antisemitism in living memory, opting for excuses over action and gaslighting those who call him out. It is time for arrests and a ban on the anti-Israel marches.

“From politics to the BBC to universities, the Jewish community sees betrayal across our civil and cultural institutions. The cumulative result is that less than half of British Jews feel welcome in the UK. Antisemitism has become our nation’s great shame, and time is running out.”
